Guide

How to scan old documents for the best restoration

A good capture makes every repair cleaner. It takes a minute and needs nothing more than a phone.

  1. 1

    Use soft, even light

Daylight or two lamps at an angle avoid glare and shadows across creases.

  2. 2

    Keep every edge in frame

Include torn edges and corners so they can be rebuilt cleanly.

  3. 3

    Scan at high resolution

300 to 600 DPI, or your phone's full-size photo, keeps fine detail.

  4. 4

Don't clean or flatten by force

Leave fragile paper as it is. Scripily repairs the image, not the original.

Tip: run Deep restore first, then fix any gaps that are left with Fill hole / tear in the area tools. For photographs, try Colorize page and Repair faces after restoring.

FAQ

Questions about restoring old documents

How do I restore an old document with AI?

Upload a photo or scan of the document, or a PDF, to Scripily and press Deep restore. Tears, holes, missing corners, water damage, mould and deep creases are repaired across the whole page while the original printing and handwriting are kept. Then compare before and after and download the restored copy.

Is old document restoration free?

Signing up and uploading are free, and the simple presets and Auto enhance are free to use. A deep restore uses 150 points per page, and every plan, including the free plan, comes with monthly points. If a restore fails, the points are returned. See the pricing page for the points in each plan.

What kind of damage can it repair?

Tears, holes and insect damage, torn or missing corners and frayed edges, water damage and tide lines, mould and mildew, burn and scorch marks, and heavy folds that break the text. For lighter problems such as stains, foxing or faded ink, Scripily also has Standard and Faded Text restoration.

Will the restored document still look original?

Yes. Deep Restoration repairs the damage and rebuilds lost paper around it, but keeps the original type, handwriting, layout and paper tone. Choose the Gentle strength in the area tools when you want to keep more of the aged look.

Can it rebuild parts of the page that are missing?

Yes. Missing corners and torn edges are rebuilt as part of the deep restore. For a specific gap, draw a box around it and use Fill hole / tear or Rebuild missing area to reconstruct the paper and print in that spot.

Does it change or damage my original paper document?

No. Scripily works on a photo or scan, so the fragile original never has to be handled, cleaned or repaired. You get a restored digital copy you can print, share and archive, while the original stays exactly as it is.

Can I restore old photos that are part of a document?

Yes. Restore photo repairs scratches, fading and dust on a picture inside the page, Repair faces sharpens faces in old photographs, and Colorize page or Colorize area adds natural colour to black and white images.

Can I restore many old documents at once?

Yes. Batch Restore processes up to 100 pages in one go with a ready-made pipeline such as Damaged originals, which straightens each page, runs a deep restore, repairs tears and water damage and upscales the result.

What file types are supported?

JPG and PNG images and whole PDF files. Every page keeps its full resolution, and you can download the restored page as an image or PDF or save it to your Scripily library.

How should I scan an old document for the best restoration?

Lay the page flat, use even light without shadows or glare, and scan or photograph it at a high resolution. Include the full edges of the page, even if they are torn, so the damage can be repaired cleanly.
